Europe's directive on waste electronics is proving to be benefit for recycling specialists, with Australian company Sims Group doubling its capacity.

The firm said it will increase capacity in the UK by switching work from Manchester to Stalybridge, which is able to process 25,000 tonnes of material per year, equivalent to some three million PCs, it said.

"Our client list has expanded rapidly over the past year or so, even though the WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directive has yet to be transposed," said Jason Price, regional manager for Sims.

"Many of our Blue Chip clients are involved through their corporate social responsibility programmes, and have taken early and effective compliance measures ahead of the Directive’s transposition into UK Law next year."

Throughout Europe, Sims said it now has the capability to process 150,00 tonnes of electrical and electronic waste. It also has facilities in the US and Australia.
